Over 1,100 kilograms of trash collected from Kinalumsan River shoreline
In solidarity with the global movement for cleaner oceans and healthier ecosystems, SM Seaside City Cebu and SM City Cebu led this year’s International Coastal Cleanup on September 20, 2025, at the shores of Kinalumsan River, Barangay Mambaling, Cebu City.
The initiative gathered over 500 volunteers from SM employee-volunteers and partner organizations, including the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Philippine National Police (PNP), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), National University Cebu, Nature’s Spring, Airspeed, 2GO, and PricewaterhouseCoopers Cebu, Silver Herstal Security Agency, Inc., Mega Corinthians Integrated Security, Inc., Pacubas General Services, Inc., Spic and Span, and Superior Maintenance Services.
Together, the participants successfully collected 1,103 kilograms of trash from the shoreline, preventing harmful waste from reaching the open sea. The most common debris included single-use plastics, food packaging, and other non-biodegradable waste that continue to threaten marine life and coastal communities.
The International Coastal Cleanup, observed annually every September, serves as a reminder of the urgent responsibility to safeguard oceans, rivers, and waterways. By joining this worldwide initiative, SM Seaside City Cebu and SM City Cebu carry forward their commitment to environmental stewardship and collective action for a waste-free future.
This collective effort is part of SM Cares’ Environmental Programs, which champion climate resilience, sustainable practices, and the reduction of plastic pollution. Through these initiatives, SM Supermalls continue to mobilize communities toward meaningful action for the planet, encouraging more people to take part and #SeaTheChange.
