Turning advocacy into tangible action, the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) has successfully installed a PET bottle receptacle bin at Southwestern University–PHINMA under its Flood Hero Cebu Movement, reinforcing its commitment to addressing plastic waste while advancing community-driven flood mitigation solutions.
The installation marks another step in expanding accessible collection points across key institutions, encouraging responsible plastic disposal and strengthening environmental stewardship at the community level. More than a collection facility, the PET bottle bin stands as a visible symbol of shared responsibility in reducing plastic pollution and minimizing its impact on urban flooding.
Southwestern University–PHINMA, recognized for its strong culture of innovation and civic engagement, now joins a growing network of partner institutions supporting the Flood Hero initiative. The collaboration underscores the critical role of the academe in advancing environmental awareness and mobilizing collective action, particularly among the youth. The installation was made possible through the facilitation of Ms. Rutchel “Chen” Llanto, whose coordination was instrumental to the initiative’s success.
This latest milestone builds on the momentum of previous installations in partner institutions, including the University of the Visayas (33 kilograms collected), College of Technological Sciences–Cebu (63 kilograms), University of San Jose–Recoletos Basak Campus (100 kilograms), and Cebu Institute of Technology–University (151.50 kilograms). These results not only demonstrate the scale of plastic waste generated in everyday activities but also highlight the measurable impact of sustained, community-driven action across campuses.
Beyond collection, the initiative ensures that recovered PET bottles are repurposed into functional environmental solutions. By transforming waste into resources, the program contributes to strengthening Cebu’s circular economy while demonstrating the value of innovation, collaboration, and practical climate action.
In partnership with the Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CCENRO), collected plastics are converted into environmental interceptors installed in rivers and waterways. These systems capture floating waste before it reaches the sea, directly addressing marine pollution at its source while helping improve water flow and mitigate flooding in urban areas.
CCCI extends its sincere appreciation to Southwestern University–PHINMA for its strong institutional support, which played a key role in the successful implementation of this initiative.
The Chamber continues to strengthen collaboration with academic institutions, local government units, and the private sector to expand the program across Cebu: advancing shared efforts toward a more resilient, environmentally responsible, and flood-ready community.
