The Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), together with five academic institutions, has been formally recognized by the Cebu City Council through Resolution No. 17-3741-2026 for its collective efforts in promoting responsible plastic waste management, environmental sustainability, and flood mitigation through the Flood Hero Movement.
The resolution commends CCCI and its partner institutions: Southwestern University-PHINMA, University of the Visayas, College of Technological Sciences-Cebu, University of San Jose-Recoletos Basak Campus, and Cebu Institute of Technology-University for their active participation in the CCCI-led Flood Hero Movement, particularly through the installation of PET bottle collection bins across their respective campuses.
The initiative encourages the responsible disposal and segregation of plastic waste by providing students, faculty, and staff with convenient collection points for used PET bottles. Beyond promoting proper waste management practices, the program also fosters environmental awareness and community engagement within the academic community.
Collected PET bottles are sorted and repurposed into environmental river interceptors, or floating booms, designed to capture floating waste before it reaches rivers and coastal waters. Through this innovative approach, discarded plastic is transformed into practical environmental solutions that contribute to reducing plastic pollution, mitigating flood risks, and protecting local ecosystems.
In the resolution, the Cebu City Council recognized the collaboration between CCCI and the participating colleges and universities as a model of civic responsibility, innovation, and environmental leadership. The Council further highlighted how the initiative embodies Circular Economy (CE) principles by giving discarded plastic a second life as functional infrastructure that benefits both the environment and the broader community.
The recognition also highlights CCCI’s broader commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Through its Sustainability and Environment Stewardship Alliance and strategic partnerships, the Chamber continues to promote Circular Economy principles, responsible waste management, climate resilience, and sustainable business practices. Beyond the Flood Hero Movement, CCCI supports environmental awareness campaigns, stakeholder engagements, capability development and collaborative initiatives that encourage businesses and communities to take an active role in protecting the environment and building a more sustainable Cebu.
